Let me create a treasured heirloom for you or your loved ones! Immortalize your baby, child, grandchild, husband or wife, parents, ancestors, or beloved pet. A portrait is a special, unique gift for any occasion. It is the ideal present for the person who “has everything”! A portrait is also perfect for presentation to a valued client, respected employer, or loyal business partner.
What to Expect
I am currently accepting commissions for charcoal or pencil portrait drawings. Usually miniatures will be done in pencil and other sizes in charcoal. Drawings will be black charcoal/pencil on white or ivory paper, or black and white charcoal/pencil on grey or earth-toned paper. Let me know if you want a specific color.
Your portrait will be created completely freehand, with no aid from computers or projectors (as some portrait artists use). Remember that your portrait will be carefully created by a trained American artist. Each one is a work of art, not an assembly line product; therefore, it has more inherent worth. You will get real value for your money.
Your portrait will not be a dull, slavishly detailed copy of the photograph, but rather a unique, artistic, and expressive (yet quite realistic) interpretation. The background will be normally be simple in order to focus on the subject (person or pet).
To get an idea of my style, you can see examples of my portraits and pet portraits. I can work from photographs or, if you live locally, we can make arrangements for a portrait from life (in which you sit while I draw).
When I complete your portrait, I will email you a preview link so you can review and approve it. I don’t generally make changes at this point. If you are not satisfied with the portrait drawing (which has never happened), I will refund your money. After your approval, portrait drawings are non-refundable. I will notify you when it has been shipped.
Time
I will usually be able to complete and ship your portrait drawing within 2 weeks.
What Kind of Photo(s) to Send
- You can send your own photographs or family snapshots. Photographs taken by a professional or a studio cannot be used without their written permission because they are copyrighted (their lighting usually does not work well for my portrait style anyway).
- Choose a photograph that provides strong light and shadow, preferably with the face turned at an angle, not straight ahead. It is best if you can send several for me to choose from. If you are taking a new photograph, do not use the flash because it tends to flatten out the subject; make sure there is light coming from one side only (not from the front).
- If you live locally (near Charlotte, NC), I can photograph the subject myself, recommend a local photographer, or work from life.
Materials
At this time, I am accepting commissions only for charcoal or pencil portrait drawings. Usually miniatures will be done in pencil and other sizes in charcoal. Drawings will be black charcoal/pencil on white or ivory paper, or black and white charcoal/pencil on grey or earth-toned paper. I have made a careful study of materials and techniques and use only those of the highest quality, so that your portrait can be treasured for generations. For drawings, I use high-quality, acid-free paper.

Shipping, tax, and frame are not included.
Custom Orders
Please contact me if you would like something different and I will send you the exact price. We can discuss any questions you have. Then I’ll create a custom listing for you (or we can make arrangements for cash) and let you know where to mail, email, or bring your photo(s).
- Full figure or including hands: 50% more
- Complex or special backgrounds: 25-50% more.
- Additional figures on the same canvas are not discounted.
I highly recommend separate portraits of children so that one day they can each inherit one.
